Are we facing social media grieving fatigue?
With Paris, everyone collectively lost their shit with the “Je Suis Charlie,” and then later, the “Je Suis Paris” after the other terrorist attack, and then people got angry about how we weren’t paying attention to the other deaths happening in the world every day with the “Je Suis” tagline and people began changing their Facebook profile pictures to the French flag, even though that was used as a way for Facebook to track who of their users are trend-following idiots and which of their users aren’t.
Now, with the newest mass murder under our belt, people are beginning to do the whole “I Am Orlando” thing. Really though? Was this even a good catchphrase to begin with, and do the world’s tragedies really need fucking hashtags to go along side of them?
This newest fuck-all of terrible shit is immediately being politicized as an LGBT issue, or a gun control issue, and soon enough, a religious issue, and a mental health issue, and then of course, a racial issues. Maybe it's all of these things, maybe it's none of them.
But what we’re not seeing, at least not in as strong of numbers, is the “I AM” taglines that go with it. Is it because Americans love to put their noses in shit when it doesn’t actually have to do with them, and when its on their own soil, it's all of a sudden more complicated than a simple profile picture edit?
Is it because all everyone does lately is “weigh in” on something, and recently, there’s been a lot to weigh in on, but also, shut the fuck up and fuck off.
In the current state of movies, there is a term called “super hero fatigue,” which refers to the fact that there are so many super hero movies happening right now that people are just sick and tired of them.
With each new tragedy, you’ll get people that always have, and always will, make some comment on it. Here are the posts you will be scrolling past in the next few days, and possibly, in this order:
I am not there, but my heart is with whoever is actually there, and to all the people who feel the same as me just know that I’m the same as you and together we are feeling the same thing
I usually don’t comment on these things, however, in the wake of recent events: I want you to know that I really thought out and spell checked this response, because it means so deeply to me that you read these words that I have written about this thing that I am writing about. It is with this rare paragraph form of a status that I ask that every once in a while, you take me seriously, because I am not just Youtube links and funny memes and think piece articles. I have feelings, and right now, they are right here in front of you, asking for a like or a comment, so that we can all feel a little more educated and righteous about this recent event that happened.
This is why those (insert racial slur here) need to be kept out or locked up and killed and (insert politician here) is trying to let them into our country and (insert other politician here) is trying to keep them out and all I know is that I hate (insert racial slur here).
The Tony’s are/were on!
I was fortunate enough to see Hamilton, and because I saw Hamilton, seeing Lin-Manuel Miranda speak after winning all the awards for Hamilton, which it honestly deserves every single one because it was soooo good, I cried listening to his words on what is happening in the world, and also because I was reminded of how good Hamilton was also I saw Hamilton.
