I can’t believe the amount of love and support I’ve gotten from everyone because of my last piece, even if I didn’t exactly agree with the revised title this website created for it.
I care so much about getting my words out, and believe that this website can be such a great way to do it, I’m super excited to present you with my newest article!!
Thank you Discordant Years for sifting through all the emails I’ve berated you with and thank you for reading this readers!
Everything You Wanted To Ask A Medium…But Were Too Afraid To Ask
I get it, Mediums can be intimidating. Theresa Caputo is a joke, and Tyler Henry is a try-hard drowning in his own flaccid hair. That’s why I connect so much more with Monica Ten-Kate from her show Monica the Medium (Mondays @ 10pm on Freeform).
I can’t breathe when I listen to Theresa Caputo, she's too much. Monica is so much more relatable, and the problems she juggles with are things that I see happen to me on a daily basis. College and job issues, boys (although I’m currently abstaining, I still get the struggle…been there), and having this sense that you have a greater calling from something more magnificent. Tyler Henry just wishes he could help people the way Monica does, and the way I wish I could.
1) Do you talk to God?
I know that sounds crazy, but it’s not. Not really. People talk to God everyday. I guess the bigger question is:
2) Does God talk to you?
He must be guiding the spirits from his world. I see God as the middleman, like the kid who sat between me and Bobby Dagostelli in 7th grade History as we passed notes back and forth to each other. I don’t remember the kids name, but I know Bobby isn’t doing so well now. In fact, if it hasn’t happened already, God may become the middleman between me and Bobby…I hear he’s got a drug problem.
3) What is it like to go on dates as a Medium?
It must be so hard, because a lot of the time, the cameras are there recording everything. I know they must have a lot of patience, because I understand needing to take the call when it comes ringing down from above. Tyler seems to be a perfect match for Monica, truly. He’s way better than those other Mediums and the people they surround themselves with.
4) And the roommates?
I want to be a roommate with a Medium! Some people like waking up in the morning to the smell of fresh coffee and breakfast sizzling in the pan. I want to wake up knowing that at any moment, the spirit world could come knocking at the door.
Plus, at the moment, I live alone in a studio apartment in Jackson Heights – I’m not waking up to the smell of food or coffee unless I’ve started sleep walking again.
5) How do you decipher between the good and the bad messages?
Do you ever get someone who has evil intent? I understand not wanting to pass on that message, so do you keep it to yourself? What's the worst thing you've ever heard?
6) Does Spirit ever wake you up while you’re sleeping?
Sometimes, I get headaches that wake me and I’ll rush to the bathroom to throw up.
7) Have you ever fallen in love with someone who has already crossed over?
Or do they flirt with you ever? I feel like this could be a really great idea for a movie. Is Mandy Moore still acting?
8) How often do people ask you to mentor them? How does this gift occur and how do you know?
Sometimes, my headaches get so intense that I feel like I can hear someone talking to me through it. I am bound to the idea that these are religious experiences of the highest order, but everyone has their doubts, you know?
9) Is it hard to juggle family life when you’re a Medium?
Thanksgiving is so hard for me as it is. Since my new, sober life began under the watchful eye of God, I am still faced with the looks and memories from family members who had to experience me through what I now call “The Dark Years.”
Every Saturday, I look forward to going to bed so I can wake up for Sunday. Every Sunday, once the day is done, I have inner piece that brings me through to Monday. Every Monday night, I turn on Freeform, and I find solace at 10pm.
